"Tomato Roll" to get Parade off to Juicy Start

A “Tomato Roll” will kick off this year’s Old Shawnee Days parade, with proceeds benefiting Shawnee Town Museum.

Red rubber “tomatoes” can be purchased and then entered in a race that will kick off at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2010, just prior to the Old Shawnee Days parade that’s scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. The “tomatoes” will be dropped from a bucket loader to roll and bounce through an obstacle course set up near Johnson Drive and Nieman Road. The event is presented by Friends of Shawnee Town.

There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for the “tomatoes” that cross the finish line first. There will also be a “rotten tomato” gag gift for the last tomato to cross the finish line. For a donation of $5.00, contestants get 2 “tomatoes” and for $20 you get a “bushel” of 10.

Prior to June 5, 2010 you can purchase Tomato Roll tomatoes over the phone or in person at Shawnee Town Museum’s Visitor Center or drop by Jake’s Place at 12001 Johnson Drive. On the 5th of June they can be purchased near the corner Nieman and Johnson Drive from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the race.

Friends of Shawnee Town came up with the idea of a Tomato Roll to play off Shawnee’s rich agricultural past and help raise funds and awareness of Shawnee Town Museum’s transformation to a 1920s Truck farming community.

“A tomato roll seems like a fun way to spotlight the farm heritage of our community and the role that Shawnee Town plays in preserving our area’s agricultural history,” explains Friends of Shawnee Town President, Les Palmer. The “Tomato Roll” will be set up much like a Duck Derby, where patrons purchase a numbered rubber ball that is then included in the race. The winning “tomato’s” numbers will be matched to the winner’s receipt.

Contact Shawnee Town Museum at (913) 248-2360, to purchase your “tomato”.
