Parade - Sat, June 7th, 10:00 am"Spotlight on Shawnee" The Old Shawnee Day's Parade is one of the largest in the State of Kansas. The parade route is Nieman and Shawnee Mission Parkway north to Nieman to Johnson Dirve west to Cody in front of Shawnee Town. Awards will be given in several categories. The "Grand Marshall's Trophy" will be presented to the best overall unit. There is no fee to enter the parade. Questions: Rick Wartko (913) 268-9685. "Tomato" Roll to get Parade off to Juicy StartWant to be a Big Tomato during Old Shawnee Days? Then enter the “Tomato Roll” that will kick off this year’s Parade! Red rubber “tomatoes” can be purchased prior to the Parade and then entered in a race that will take place just before the Parade, at 9:30am. The “tomatoes” will be dropped from a bucket loader to roll and bounce through an obstacle course set up at the corner of Nieman and Johnson Drive. Proceeds will benefit Shawnee Town Museum. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for the “tomatoes” that cross the finish line first. There will also be a “rotten tomato” gag gift for the last place finish. Friends of Shawnee Town are hosting the event in order to help raise funds and awareness of Shawnee Town Museum’s transformation to a 1920s Truck farming community. The “Tomato Roll” will be set up much like a Duck Derby, where patrons purchase a numbered rubber ball that is then included in the race. The winning “tomato” numbers will be matched to the winner’s receipt.
Emcee of the 2008 Old Shawnee Days Parade will be Mike Thompson, Fox 4 Chief Meteorologist. |
